We understand that jumping into the world of publishing can be a daunting prospect. That's why we decided to put together a handy set of resources and a guide to some of the terms you may come across on yur journey to becoming a published author.

Glossary

A Format: The smallest of three trade paperback sizes. 178mm x 110mm

B Format: The middle size of trade paperback. 198mm x 130mm

Blurb: The text on the back of a book briefly describing and promoting the story or content of the book.

C Format: The largest size of trade paperback. 216mm x 135mm

CMYK: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. A type of colour scale, the industry standard in publication.

Dust Jacket: An removable cover placed over a hardback book. Usually made using glossy paper, featuring a duplicate of the book jacket.

GSM: Grams per Square Metre. A scale of quality for paper. Thicker, better quality paper tends to have a higher GSM rating.

ISBN: International Standard Book Number. A sixteen digit code unique to each book published worldwide.

Jacket: The outer cover of a book.

Legal Despatch: The legal requirement that a copy of every book published in the U.K. be deposited in the British Library archives.

Mass Market Paperback: Books which are mass produced, usually with recycled paper and to a lower standard of quality than most books.

Print On Demand: A system of publishing where a book is printed and bound every time one is purchased.

Proof copy: An individual copy of a book produced before the main print run to confirm the dimensions, layout etc. are all correct.

RGB: Red, Green and Blue. A type of colour scale, usually used in video/television.

Spine: The thin edge of a book jacket.

Trade Paperback: Paperback books which conform to one of three industry standard sizes

Typeface: The font your book will be printed in e.g. Times New Roman, Arial, Lucida Bright

Type size: The size of the text in your book. Measured in Points.
